Expert Opinion

If you get a call from +44 300 200 3300 claiming HMRC is after you for tax fraud, treat it as a classic scam. The voice is usually automated, urges you to press 1 or hand over personal details, and threatens arrest or huge fines. Hang up instantly and verify any claim by contacting HMRC directly via their official website or the number on a genuine HMRC letter. Never give banking info or make payments over the phone. Report the number to Action Fraud and consider blocking it on your handset to avoid repeated harassment.

Two different numbers reached out to me, both of which checked out as registered to HMRC, yet the scammers are becoming increasingly clever! After consulting with my accountant, I was advised not to engage as they had already contacted HMRC in writing and received a response. The caller claimed they had received a request for information but were uncertain of its legitimacy, urging me to call back and provide my national insurance number!

443002003300 Scam Scammer (Tax)

Initially, a letter appeared credible, stating I was owed tax, but upon further investigation, it seems likely to be a scam due to discrepancies, such as the delayed cheque and detailed calculations. This sophisticated approach could deceive many.
