After the call dropped, I searched the number online, recognised it as a London line that’s been used for many cold calls, and I never call back.

In the heart of a quiet evening in London, unexpected calls like this one from a local number can spark unease, especially if they're unsolicited cold calls. Reports suggest these are often intrusive marketing attempts or worse, potential scams probing for personal details. Hang up immediately and avoid returning the call, as it could lead to unwanted charges or data theft. Enable caller ID blocking on your phone, register with the Telephone Preference Service to cut down on nuisance calls, and report suspicious numbers to Action Fraud. Stay vigilant—verifying unknown callers through official channels protects against fraudsters who exploit trust.
