Expert Opinion

A wave of similar reports points to a coordinated scam circulating via Meetup and other platforms. Victims describe a person—or duo—posing as a recent mover from places like Las Vegas or Nevada, offering large cash offers for a first date and weaving tragic backstories. The scheme often escalates to requests for gift‑card payments or money transfers. Stay skeptical of unsolicited offers that sound too good to be true, especially when they involve personal emergencies or promises of quick cash. Verify identities through the platform, avoid clicking unknown links, and never share financial details. If you suspect fraud, report the profile and block the number.
